REAPER is out
December 23, 2005
OK so if you go to The REAPER website you can get REAPER v0.40, which is now public.

Every time I release something I'm always trying to get shit perfect, but I always fail and end up releasing more updates, so I'm just going to be OK with that, and though this release should be pretty good overall, you might want to check back for updates (I may do them a couple times a day, even).

Now I just get to sit back and let people tell me what is (or isn't) broken.

Also, I propose that people send me small REAPER projects for possible inclusion as examples, or REAPER color themes (for inclusion). I'm going to update the web site to reflect this and encourage people to submit.

Hi,

OK. First you'll have to put more effort in the GUI. The != menus/submenus are really way too complex and need to be reworked. Second, Justin, you have to change the name of the program :). The name must reflect the nature of the program and REAPER is really obscure. The overall functionality seems OK and promizing. I'm looking for the 1.0 release. Keep up the good work !!

Best regards,
Ilyes Gouta. (from Sousse which is a nice town located on the eastern coast of Tunisia which is in turn located in the north of Africa, Oh yeah...)

not sure I understand "The != menus/submenus" part.. what in specific is too complex?

and I'm not totally satisfied with the name either, but haven't heard anything better yet. REAPER does have something to do with it, because it enables me to reap my harvest, etc...

Don't change the name, Justin. Sometimes the best programs' names have nothing to do with their function(s). (For example, Tron. :)) As a fellow programmer, I call my programs whatever I want to. I'm not a freaking marketing department.

Yeah, but sometimes we have to find a compromise.

So, I messed around with it for a bit with some source files from a song I'd recorded a little while back. It took a little getting used to, but once I got the hang of it, it was pretty simple. Although I like its simplicity and size, I probably wouldn't consider it for any project at least in its current form. Here's a direct comparison (same source files) of that song. (Each about 1.3mb)

With Tracktion 1.0 (

With Reaper 0.40 (rogerroll.net/music/apresentwithreaper).mp3)

Do you think you'll add support for MIDI tracks; eg the ability to compose beats, to make it a content creation system as well?

yeah MIDI is something we will add, just not right away, lots of other pcm stuff to do :) oh yeah, and to people who say "I wouldn't consider it for any project", I'd just ask what you see as being missing (there is plenty missing no doubt), and to wait and see how it looks in 6 months, too. Since it's very new and has a ways to go (the current release represents a little over a month's worth of work..) anyway.

I don't know if I am alone in this but my copy of Reaper causes a system restart when I quit the app!
